Under supervision, the Airport Operations Officer patrols County airports; monitors operations; provides security, safety, and emergency assistance when needed; greets, assists and provides information to the public in the performance of routine duties and special assignments; and performs related work as required.

Educational Incentive: 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% of base wage, dependent upon educational achievement.

This position is represented by the Ventura County Professional Peace Officers Association (VCPPOA) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established for this position may be used to fill existing and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent and extra-help positions.

 Examples Of Duties:
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

* Performing daily operations activities at either one of two county-operated airports (a general aviation airport and a non-hub commercial service airport);
* Conducting airfield inspections; ensuring compliance with requirements of FAR Part 139 and TSA regulations part 1540/1542; * Responding to aircraft incidents/accidents;
* Operating ARFF truck for aircraft emergencies;
* Coordinating and monitoring various activities of commuter airlines, FBO's, hangar owner/renters, leasing tenants, FAA, and the general public;
* Maintaining familiarity with federal, state, and local aviation rules and regulations and aircraft operating environment;
* Issuing Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs);
* Monitoring airfield security; administering vehicle paid parking lot and parking regulations;
* Assisting callers/visitors and promoting good public relations;
* Overseeing construction activity/safety on airfield;
* Completing airport research/administrative projects as assigned; * Representing the County in the absence of management and outside of conventional working hours; and
* Performing related duties as assigned.

 Typical Qualifications:
These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

Education, Training and Experience: Any combination of education, training or experience equiivalent to a minimum of six (6) months experience working at a general aviation, military or commercial service airport or an on-airport aviation business. The following may be substituted for the requisite experience: possession of a Private Pilot License, completion of an airport internship, or one year of college-level coursework (30 units) in airport/aviation administration (or equivalent). A degree in airport/aviation administration/management highly desirable. Knowledge of FAR required.

Within the first six (6) months of employment, the following must be completed/obtained:
-FAA approved private pilot ground school course.
-Basic firefighting course (offered by the community college district). Equivalent prior training may be substituted for this requirement.
-Basic First Aid Certificate.
-Certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Necessary Special Requirements: Ability to work all shifts (days, evenings, nights) and rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays at either and/or both the Camarillo Airport and the Oxnard Airport. Applicants who do not indicate availability for all shifts and availability for both Camarillo and Oxnard, will not be invited to the exam. Possession and maintenance of a valid, unrestricted California driver license.

 Examination Process:

Application Evaluation - qualifying: All applications will be reviewed to determine whether or not the stated requirements are met. Those individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to the written examination.

Written Examination - 100%: A written examination will be administered to test candidates' knowledge of job-related information, regulations, terminology, aircraft procedures and judgment. Candidates must earn a score of 70 percent of higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Background Investigation - Applicants are subject to a thorough background investigation which may include inquiry into past employment, education, credit, criminal, and driving records.

Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one year.
