- Thread-Topic: Mutual Help List, Crops on or near airports
Hi Jeff,
Our farmer grows a winter crop, so no irrigation is used. The same farmer has
leased the land for years and years, and at one time did use irrigation. No
problem at all with birds. We do see a few during seeding, but no more than in
the non-cultivated areas. Deer can be a problem, but we eliminated that when
the perimeter fence was completed a few years ago.
The farming program has worked well for us. It is not a huge source of
revenue, but the real advantage is that simplifies maintenance by eliminating
mowing and brush removal. That saves us hundreds of hours of staff labor costs
annually.
Barry

Barry do you provide water or do they have some type of water rights. On a
well? No problem with birds?

Redding Municipal leases cropland on the airport. Alfalfa and barley are grown.

I'm interested in knowing if other airports allow farming on or adjacent to
their airport and if so, what crops are allowed.
Thanks for your help,
