Rezoning allows airport growth
By Robert Igoe

Winchester - Winchester Regional Airport officials are celebrating a recent
Frederick County Board of Supervisors vote as a step toward a more
streamlined airport map.
During their regular meeting on Wednesday, the supervisors approved a
request from the Winchester Regional Airport Authority to rezone a total of
37.4 acres of airport property from Light Industrial and Residential Planned
Community districts to Rural Areas District.
The areas rezoned include a 21-acre parcel of land where the airport's
terminal building stands, and other properties the airport has acquired.
By having the properties rezoned to Rural Areas District, which allows an
airport as a permitted use without the need for special-use or
conditional-use permits, airport Executive Director Serena "Renny" Manuel
said the airport can more easily expand its services.
"This was a matter of cleaning up the map," she said. "We wanted to have all
of our property listed as one district."
One project Manuel gave as an example was a proposed expansion of the
parking lot. Manuel said that no start date for the project has been
decided, but it is part of the airport's 20-year master plan.
Manuel said the airport will now look to make boundary line adjustments to
make the patchwork of several plots of land into one plot that encompasses
all 475 acres.
Manuel also said that the airport recently reached a lease agreement for a
5,000-gallon-capacity fuel truck. Overall, the airport pays $4,059 per month
for the truck and other vehicles and equipment.
