Commissioners clarify ownership of county airport hangers

CHARLESTON - Mississippi County has a new policy for hangars at the county
airport: the owners can keep them as long as they maintain them in good
condition.

Commissioners announced the policy during their regular meeting Thursday
during a discussion with Bruce Austin of Charleston.

Austin attended Thursday's meeting to find out of he could sell his hangar.
The original contracts called for the hangars to become the property of the
county 20 years after they were built.

"We're doing away with that policy," Presiding Commissioner Jim Blumenberg
said.

Owners have in fact retained ownership and are paying real estate taxes for
the hangars, Blumenberg noted.

Blumenberg said the only situation in which the county would take possession
of a hangar at the county airport would be "if it got to be a public
nuisance" at which time the county would tear it down.

"It would be an eyesore if not maintained," he added.

In the event a hangar is not maintained, the county's policy is "get it
fixed or lose it," Blumenberg said.

There are about a half-dozen hangars at the county airport.
