Compost Permit Denied Due To Airport Proximity
KLFY-TV Ch 10 (CBS), Lafayette (LA)
A proposed facility that would turn garbage and sewage sludge into compost
soil was denied a state permit because of its proximity to an airport.
The State Department of Environmental Quality last week denied Iberia
Parish's request for a permit to build the $6.2 million plant.
Parish President Will Langlinais says he plans to meet with DEQ officials to
discuss options.
The site is less than 4,000 feet from the runway at Acadiana Regional
Airport.
Regulations for such facilities require they be at least 10,000 feet from a
runway because they attract birds that can get caught in aircraft engines.
