Plane goes off end of runway at Trenton-Mercer Airport
Newsday (NY)
EWING, N.J. -- A small plane overshot the end of a runway at Trenton-Mercer
Airport on Wednesday, injuring one person.
Officials said the injured person, one of four onboard the single-engine
Pilatus, was taken to a hospital. They had no immediate information on which
hospital or the patient's condition.
The plane sustained heavy damage, said Holly Westergren, a spokeswoman for
the Mercer County executive.
The plane took off at 2:26 p.m. and climbed to 1,200 feet before one of two
pilots reported engine problems, Westergren said.
The pilot circled and landed on another runway, but overshot the pavement by
about 1,000 feet and crashed into a fence, Westergren said. It was raining
heavily at the time.
The main runway reopened about 3 p.m., but the runway where the plane
attempted to land remained closed, Westergren said.
The plane is registered to Unionville Aviation Inc. of Wilmington, Del.,
said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters.
The FAA and New Jersey Department of Transportation were investigating.
