Jeffco airport gets FAA award
The Denver (CO) Business Journal

The Jefferson County Airport was honored by the Federal Aviation
Administration this month for lowering its number of potentially
dangerous incidents.

The airport received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the
northwest mountain region of the FAA.

In 2000, the airport reported 23 runway incursions (planes coming too
close to other aircraft or objects) and surface incidents (people,
wildlife or vehicles gaining access to secure areas without clearance
from the control tower), the second-worst record in the United States.
In 2002, that number dropped to two.

The airport spent about $1.5 million in improvements to fix the
problems, including an access control system to prevent unauthorized
entry; installing wildlife fencing, and redesigning taxiways to increase
distance between planes. About 90 percent of that money came from the
FAA.
