Board Postpones Charlotte County, Fla., Airport Director's Evaluation
The Sun, Port Charlotte, Fla.

The job performance evaluation of the Charlotte County Airport's
executive director will not be known until November.

Airport Authority board members agreed Thursday to postpone releasing
its comments on Gary Quill's job performance over the last year until
they could review a list of goals Quill submitted for the following
year.

Under the terms of Quill's contract, airport board members are required
to annually review his job performance and consider giving him a raise.
As part of the evaluation process, Quill submitted a list of goals for
the next year.

Among the goals on Quill's list are to maintain a safe operating
environment on the airfield, to keep fuel and T-hangar prices
competitive, develop a marketing package for the airport and update the
airport's Web site.

Quill was hired in October 2001 to replace the former executive
director, Fred Watts, who resigned in April 2001 to accept a position
with the Lee County Port Authority.

In another matter, Airport Authority board member Pam Seay voiced her
concerns regarding the airport overlay district, notably the impact on
airport tenants.

The new district is south of Bermont Road (County Road 74) and Fairway
Drive, north of Jones Loop Road, west of Grove Boulevard and east of
Interstate 75.

Seay said that, although she agreed with the concept of the overlay
district, she is worried the methodology is not in the best interests of
the airport and its tenants.

"I'm not saying it's a bad project," she said.

Airport Authority board member Michael Grant said he shared some of her
concerns, but supported the overlay district because it would prevent
the property surrounding the airport from being developed in a
hodgepodge manner, "so we don't end up with a (U.S.) 41 through
Charlotte Harbor that is deteriorating and losing property value."
