Charlotte County, Fla., Airport Gets $150,000 Grant for Fencing
The Sun, Port Charlotte, Fla.
The Charlotte County Airport received a $150,000 grant to install
fencing and automatic gates along the western end of the facility.
The Federal Aviation Administration funds will cover 90 percent of the
cost of the project, while the remaining 10 percent -- about $16,600 --
will be the airport's responsibility.
Airport Executive Director Gary Quill told the Airport Authority's board
during Monday's meeting that he hopes to get some funds from the Florida
Department of Transportation to cover part of the balance.
The money will allow the airport to have continuous chain-link fencing
along Mooney Avenue, separating aircraft and vehicles. The money will
also allow airport officials to install automatic gates -- at the north
end of the terminal and by the south ramp -- that use a lay-down card
system to allow aviation tenants access to hangars.
Quill said this is part of the airport's plan to ultimately put in
6-foot chain-link fencing around the entire facility.
The airport's executive director said he hopes to get additional grant
funding from the FAA for the remaining portion of the airport, which may
cost about $400,000, even though it may be a long shot, since general
aviation airports are not considered as high a priority as the larger
commercial airports when it comes to funding.
Quill said the airport delayed bidding for the project for about six
months to try to qualify for money in the FAA's budget for the 2002-2003
fiscal year. The FAA funds the airport received were from the agency's
2001-2002 budget.
