Airport will host open house
Thousands expected at Oakland event in Waterford Township
By Jennifer Chambers
The Detroit (MI) News
WATERFORD TOWNSHIP -- Aviation aficionados can see Oakland County
International Airport up close during an open house Aug. 25 that is
expected to draw more than 10,000 people.
Dozens of airplanes will fly into the airport from all over the state
to participate in the annual open house where airplanes, helicopters,
ultra-light and jet aircraft will be on display. Past open houses have
drawn between 12,000 to 15,000 fans.
The open house also will feature hot air balloon rides and a pancake
breakfast in one of the airport's hangars.
"I think America still has a romance with aviation. We are now going
into the 21st century. People are just interested in seeing aircraft and
taking a ride on a plane," said J. David VanderVeen, director of Oakland
County's Central Services.
Oakland County International Airport is moving forward with plans to
add more hangars, extend a runway and build an enclosure to muffle jet
engine noise on the ground.
Earlier this year, Waterford Township rezoned 23 acres of residential
property so Oakland County can reconfigure the airport to accommodate 11
new airplane hangars and improve a landing strip.
Plans call for closing one runway and then lengthening a runway on
the east side of the airport from 1,830 feet to 2,650 feet and
increasing the path's width to 75 feet.
The Federal Aviation Administration is giving Oakland County $3.3
million to make the runway improvements and build an engine run-up
enclosure -- a three-sided structure with no roof -- used to muffle the
noise from jet aircraft when their engines are being tested on the
ground.
The enclosure is expected to reduce the noise by 75 percent,
VanderVeen said.
In June, the county received $860,000 in federal grants to do the
site work, which is currently under way at the airport, VanderVeen said.
