Ruling Limits Size of Jets at Teterboro Airport
The New York (NY) Times

TETERBORO, N.J., The Federal Aviation Administration upheld a rule today
that bars a new generation of corporate jets weighing more than 100,000
pounds from using Teterboro Airport.

Jets affected by the ruling account for one or two flights per day at
Teterboro.

The decision comes nearly two years after the Boeing Corporation
submitted a complaint asking that the weight restriction be lifted to
allow its business jets, which are 737's and weigh 171,000 pounds at
maximum capacity, to use the 827-acre general aviation airport.

The rule was established by the Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey, which operates the airport.

Today, Representative Steve Rothman, a New Jersey Democrat and an
opponent of the Boeing request, praised the F.A.A. decision.

Speaking at a news conference, he said, ''If the Boeing Business Jet
were allowed to land at Teterboro Airport it would create a slippery
slope that could lead to even larger and louder aircraft using the
airport. Bergen County is no place for a 737.''

Steve Barlage, director of regional sales for the Boeing jets in New
Jersey, said the company received the F.A.A.'s nine-page decision
yesterday and was still studying it.

''We are still formulating what the next step in the process will be,''
he said.

''We took existing data, and we took the Port Authority's data and
determined the airport has the capability to handle the jets. We are
pursuing the issue of getting the airplane in there.''

In addition, the Port Authority today announced a decision to ban from
Teterboro so-called Stage 1 engines, the noisiest airplane engines on
the market, effective May 1.

The move would eliminate almost 900 flights a year from Teterboro, and
cut down on noise pollution.

Teterboro Airport, primarily used for business aviation, had 182,888
takeoffs and landings in 2000.
