Lawmakers call for Centennial Airport funds
The Denver (CO) Rocky Mountain News
Three Colorado lawmakers today urged the Federal Aviation Administration
to enforce a 7-year-old law that would allow Centennial Aiport the right
to receive federal funding but reject large commercial flights.
Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) and representatives Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.)
and Joel Hefley (R-Colo.) said the FAA has delayed federal funds to the
airport. The lawmakers said heavy traffic at the nation's second busiest
general aviation airport has added to the deterioration of parts of the
airport, including runways, and that federal funding is needed
immediately.
According to a press release issued by the lawmakers, the FAA told
lawmakers it does not expect that the new regulations would be complete
until the end of this year.
Allard said that was unacceptable.
"Enough is enough," Allard said. "The community has waited six long
years for a decision to be made by the FAA."
The FAA and Centennial have been at odds over the airport's refusal to
allow scheduled passenger service of more than 30 passengers. By not
admitting these flights, the FAA said the airport's federal funding
would be discontinued.
