Private planes headed to Olympics must detour through `gateway' airports
The Associated Press

BOISE, IDAHO - All private planes flying to Salt Lake City during the
Olympic Games will have to detour through one of four gateway airports
for security checks.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that the rule applies
to all types of aircraft. From corporate jets to single-engine Cessnas,
all noncommercial civilian aircraft headed for Salt Lake City must first
stop in either Boise, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs or Grand Junction,
Colorado.

Passengers and pilots will be required to exit the aircraft and submit
to personal searches.

Pilots also must pass extensive background checks. Forty-eight hours
before takeoff, they must call a U.S. Customs Service phone number in
Salt Lake City and reserve a time for the security checks at one of the
four gateway airports.
