Airports expecting wave of private jets
By Hal Mattern

Small airports in the Phoenix area, particularly in the West Valley, are
bracing for a possible influx of private jets this week because of the
World Series and NASCAR races.

Security will be tight at Phoenix Goodyear, Phoenix Deer Valley and
Scottsdale airports, but there will be few restrictions on planes flying
into and out of the facilities.

The Phoenix-Goodyear Municipal Airport is expecting as many as 60
aircraft to fly in this week in connection with the NASCAR races at
nearby Phoenix International Raceway, airport Manager Shawn Arena said.
As part of the airport's heightened security, no private vehicles will
be allowed in the ramp areas.

The Deer Valley Municipal Airport is too far away from both the raceway
and Bank One Ballpark to attract a large number of private planes. But
airport Director Walt Fix said it may wind up hosting a lot of planes at
the last minute. That is what happened when the Super Bowl was played in
the Valley in 1996, he said.

Scottsdale Municipal Airport, which traditionally attracts a slew of
private jets during the Phoenix Open, is preparing for a possible
last-minute increase in traffic for the games between the Arizona
Diamondbacks and the New York Yankees.

An Executive Aircraft Services officialsaid the number of planes flying
in from New York for the weekend games probably won't be known until
Friday.
