Some VFR restrictions lifted
Civilian VFR flight training is still banned, but other VFR flight
restrictions have been lifted
GA News
A notam released last night by the Department of Defense and the FAA permits
VFR flight for U.S.-registered aircraft outside of "enhanced" Class B
airspace; that is, Class B airspace within the lateral limits of the surface
to infinity.
VFR flight is still not permitted over the top of Class B airspace, "under
the shelf" (think of the upside-down wedding cake), or originating from
airports under Class B airspace.
In addition to flight training, several other VFR activities are still
banned: banner towing, sightseeing flight operations for compensation or
hire (under Part 91), traffic watch and news-reporting operations, and
airship and blimp operations.
Authorized operations outside enhanced Class B airspace include aircraft
maintenance, repositioning of balloons, Civil Air Patrol flights, gliders,
test flights by manufacturers of production aircraft, mapping and
photography missions, pipeline/power line inspections, seaplanes, skydiving,
ultralights and wildlife management operations.
Pilots of Part 91 IFR operations must still comply with previous
restrictions, including IFR from takeoff to landing. Airborne pop-up
clearances and in-flight cancellation of flight plans are still banned.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association reports that it is meeting with
White House officials this morning to discuss removing further restrictions.
Pilots are cautioned to check with their flight service station for local
notams before departing, as many temporary flight restrictions are in place
around the United States.
