Airport's neighbors worry about new noise
The Detroit (MI) Free Press

Doris Smith already has a hard time hearing "Murder She Wrote" on television
every afternoon.

Oakland County International Airport's plans to close one runway, expand
another and add more hangars just means more planes roaring over her
Waterford house -- and more missed scenes.

"It's irritating," said Smith, 64.

She was among more than 150 area residents who filled an airport terminal
Thursday for a meeting on the changes proposed in a $200,000 airport study.

Commercial flights do not fly out of the airport.

Noise, safety and pollution were among the top concerns that will be
forwarded to the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, which is expected to
vote on the changes late this year.

The study, funded mainly with a federal grant, proposes:

Extending the main runway by about 600 feet.

Closing one runway and rebuilding another about 800 feet longer and
repositioned.

Razing eight hangars that sit in the path of the extension.

Using existing airport land and 17 acres made available from the runway
closure to build up to 20 private and public hangars for more than 140
planes.
