NEW MEXICO FUNDS AT RECORD PACE; SECOND AIR SERVICE CONSIDERED
GA News

SANTA FE, New Mexico — Since the release of federal funds under AIR-21
legislation, the New Mexico Aviation Division has approved nearly 100
airport-improvement programs representing $22.5 million, including
supplemental funding of some projects that were started in fiscal 1999.

Some of the major programs:

Carlsbad (CNM), safety vehicle, $330,927.

Clovis, (CVN), glide slope & ALP, $40,000.

Deming (DMN), parallel taxiway, $222,222.

Hatch (E05), airport reconstruction, $1,000,000.

Las Vegas (LVS), widen and improve Runway 14/32, $1,930,633.

Raton (RTN), rehabilitate runway and taxiway, $709,613.

Roswell (ROW), rebuild Runway 17/35, $4,211,000.

Ruidoso (SRR), pave cross-wind runway, $3,000,000.

Santa Fe (SAF), rebuild Runway 15/33, $510,136; rebuild Runway 10/28,
$400,000; terminal area improvements, $230,000.

Silver City (SVC), apron and taxiway construction, $1,178,000.

Socorro (ONM), runway and taxiway improvements, $1,237,990.

Taos (SKX), rebuild Runway 4/22, $1,800,000.

In addition, the aviation division is looking at a second air-service
program that provides air service to smaller communities and connections to
hub airports.

Under the program, incentive funds from the affected cities are matched by
state funds to provide guarantees to commercial operators in providing
regular scheduled air service. The existing program utilizes Rio Grande Air
to link Taos and Los Alamos to Albuquerque with a daily flight schedule in a
Cessna Caravan.

Proposed air service would connect Hobbs and Carlsbad to Dallas/Fort Worth
International, and those cities plus Roswell to Denver International. The
air carrier would be Wyoming-based Big Sky Airlines, which flies Fairchild
Metroliners.

Aviation Division Director Mike Rice said that he believes the New Mexico
shared-cost air service program is the only one of its type in the United
States.

Rice also announced that fees for the New Mexico Aviation Conference have
been halved to $50 for two days and $25 for one day for those who register
by May 31.

Late registration fees are $60 and $30.

Rice said the reduction is due to the tremendous response to recent
publicity.

The conference will be held June 11-13 in Albuquerque.
