NASAO guides clarify confusing array of state aviation programs
GA News
Does your state have an airport preservation program? Does it support
aviation education in schools, have an aviation system plan, regulate tall
structures, or produce an instruction manual for airport managers? How much
money does it really spend on aviation assets? Who would you call to find
out?
Tracking information on the bewildering array of aviation divisions, bureaus
and programs is easier with the Directory of State Aviation Officials and
the State Aviation Funding and Organizational Data report. Both publications
are put out by the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO).
“This is the only place that gathers this information about state aviation
agencies,” says NASAO Vice President Lori Lehnerd.
The directory lists employees and their phone numbers for each state’s
aviation agency, and includes photos of the top aviation official in each
state. The Funding and Organizational Data report contains almost 100 areas
of information about each state’s aviation programs. Added to the 2000
edition is information on which states provide dedicated funds for navaids,
pavement maintenance and hangar construction. Each state and territory
(Puerto Rico and Guam are NASAO members) is profiled, and tables compare
each member, program by program.
One group that uses the information is the state aviation agencies
themselves. If officials want information on getting dedicated funds for
airport master plans, for example, they can see which states have such
programs, and ask for input on developing programs of their own. Other
members of the aviation community, from pilots to FBOs, can also use the
information to rally support for initiatives in their states.
The guides aren’t inexpensive — the Directory of State Aviation Officials is
$40 and the State Aviation Funding and Organizational Data is $60 — but for
the price of the proverbial $100 hamburger, you can own publications that
contain valuable information.
