FAA wouldn’t provide tower, so Kansas town builds its own
GA News

GARDEN CITY, Kansas — The airport in this Western Kansas town of 30,000 was
in the throes of a dilemma: Their 51,000 operations per year were considered
marginal for the FAA to fully fund the building and staffing of a control
tower. The airport currently is equipped with an ILS, but some users
expressed the desire for ATC.

Garden City, Western Kansas’ largest city, is located about 190 miles west
of Wichita and 250 miles southeast of Denver. It is currently served by two
commuter airlines — United Express and USAir Express — with five daily
flights connecting with Denver and Kansas City. In addition, other turbine
aircraft associated with agri-business, medical transport and the local
meat-packing industry make frequent use of GCK.

“We felt there was a large market above us that we could gain with a tower,”
explained Andrew Perry, the city’s director of aviation.

In an amazing show of community support, the city stepped up and agreed to
fund the half-million-dollar tower. Construction is getting underway on the
four-sided pre-cast concrete structure that will rise to 60 feet, with the
cab floor at about 45 feet. Officals expect the tower to be operational by
the first of October.

“We needed to capture more growth,” Perry said, “and we’ve had good positive
backing from the community.”

If growth goes as expected, the airport will increase its runway length to
8,000 feet and install another precision approach system within about three
years.
