FBO PUTS OUT WELCOME MAT FOR TURBINE AND PISTON CROWDS
GA News
LATROBE, Pennsylvania — Is GA’s turbine-vs.-piston feud blown out of
proportion?
Yes, insist the principals of a new FBO at Latrobe, even though they service
turbine aircraft exclusively.
“We put a sign out front that says ‘New FBO Facility,’” said Dan Kilkeary,
who handles marketing for L.J. Aviation. “We’re more than happy to let
piston aircraft park and use our facility. If they need fuel we get
(neighboring) Vee Neal Aviation to come and fuel them up.”
The welcoming spirit was evident at the grand opening last month of the
company’s new facility at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport (LBE). The event
drew some 100 well-wishers.
(Formerly called Westmoreland County Airport, the facility’s name was
changed last September in honor of the town’s most famous son.)
The family business is no newcomer to aviation. It has been operating
charter services as L.J. Associates for 20 years. L.J. doesn’t stand for
anything, Kilkeary said.
As for the new identity, Kilkeary said, “We’ve had pretty significant growth
in the last three years, so it made sense to change our name.”
The company now operates an all-turbine fleet of 11 aircraft, including two
Hawkers, a Citation III, a Westwind, two Lear 31As, and a Bell 206 and 407.
Dan’s father, Ed, is president; his mother, Mary Ann, is director of
charters; and his two brothers are pilots.
The FBO’s emphasis on turbines is reflected in the lack of 100LL. But as
Kilkeary says, they’ll be happy to send for the fuel truck from the
neighboring FBO while piston pilots take advantage of the amenities offered
in the new 4,800-square-foot FBO offices: a private lounge with fireplace,
crew lounge, private business suite for passengers, snooze room, showers,
conference facility and an expansive lobby.
Said Kilkeary of the luxurious surroundings: “We’re on the road all the
time, we fly about 4,500 hours a year in charter, and we know the quality of
facilities others have. We wanted to bring them here to Latrobe.”
