‘Soft concrete’ overrun will be added at Little Rock National
GA News

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — Little Rock National Airport (LIT) will receive a $5
million grant from the FAA to extend Runway 04R. An American Airlines flight
overran the 7,200- by 150-foot runway during a thunderstorm before hitting
lighting stanchions and breaking apart. The June 1,1999, crash fatally
injured 11 people, including the pilot.

The runway ends near the Arkansas River and has a shorter overrun area than
that required on most runways. The extension was in the planning stages
before the accident.

The project will include Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS)
technology, which is currently in use at only three other airports in the
country — LaGuardia International, JFK International and Minneapolis-St.
Paul International.

According to Mike Griffin of Garver Engineers of Little Rock, EMAS is
basically an engineered lightweight concrete that is made in modular form,
or blocks, and is designed to crush under specified weights.

“It would be like a very strong Styrofoam,” he said.

The weight at which the material collapses will obviously be tailored to
air-carrier aircraft, although it would still have some stopping effect for
lighter aircraft — to a point.

“The specifications are also designed so that the material will hold up ARFF
(air rescue and firefighting) vehicles,” he added.

Airport officials will not give estimates on how long the job will take
until the first planning phase is done. That completion date, they said,
should be available by the end of the month.
