CAA: GA News, "Tower Under Construction at North Las Vegas Airport"

TOWER UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT NORTH LAS VEGAS AIRPORT

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — North Las Vegas Airport is getting a new control tower.
Ground has been broken for the facility, which will be located on the east
side of the airport. Airport officials say the location will enhance the
controllers’ ability to monitor aircraft movements.
The new tower will house air traffic controllers, supervisors and airport
support personnel.
The medium-sized tower is the first of its kind to be built in the United
States and will set the standard for others around the country.
“This new standard design will help us cut costs and be more efficient as we
continue to modernize the nation’s air traffic control system,” said Bill
Withycombe, FAA Western-Pacific Region administrator.
The tower will cost approximately $6.4 million and is scheduled for
completion next April. It will be ready for full operation by October 2001.
North Las Vegas Airport is the second-busiest airport in the state of
Nevada.
In addition to the tower, a parallel runway and tiedown apron are under
construction. The crosswind runway will also be extended, a project that
will cost approximately $6 million.
