Taxiway will become a runway at Colorado’s Eagle County Airport
GA News

EAGLE, Colorado — What’s Plan B when you need to close your lone runway for
repairs?

How about turning a taxiway into a temporary landing strip?

Starting next month, Eagle County Regional Airport’s 8,000- by 150-foot
strip will be torn up and completely rebuilt. Weather permitting, the
project will begin April 23 and be finished June 23.

The first step calls for converting the taxiway into a temporary landing
strip. According to airport spokesowman Helen Lindow, the runway will close
April 22 after the departure of a scheduled commercial flight. After
takeoff, airport crews will shut down the runway and repaint the taxiway
with runway markings.

The taxiway turned runway measures 5,980 by 75 feet. Because of buildings
and other obstructions, the strip is limited to Category B aircraft (those
with an approach speed of less than 100 knots) with wingspans of less than
79 feet.

Airport officials say there will be short runway closures and airfield
limitations throughout the project. To handle inquiries, they plan on
creating a recorded airport conditions line. The telephone line, to go into
service after April 20, can be reached by calling 904-524-9490, Ext. 9.
