Runway extensions highlight Oklahoma aviation budget
GA News
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma — The Oklahoma legislature is considering an
innovative plan to bring the majority of the state’s regional airports into
the Jet Age.
The Oklahoma Aeronautics and Space Commission (OASC) is proposing a $15
million program to lengthen runways at ten Sooner airports to 5,200 ft.
(5,000 ft. adjusted to sea level), or what the state considers jet standard.
“The objective is to bring 97% of the population of Oklahoma to within a
25-minute drive of a jet-capable airport,” explained Dr. Bill D. Miller II,
OASC Director. “Right now, we have 15 regional airports that are not to jet
standard, and passage of this legislation will eliminate ten.”
The plan categorizes state airports into three functional groups: Regional
Business Airports, District Airports and Community Airports.
OASC identified the airports and communities that are both willing and
capable of joining into a partnership agreement with the state and FAA to
bring their airports up to regional status. FAA will provide 60% of the
funding of the projects, OASC 20%, and local government 20%.
