Montana Aviation Conference breaks records in Billings
GA News
BILLINGS, Montana — A record-shattering crowd of nearly 700 delegates filled
the convention center during the recent Montana Aviation Conference. The
event, which includes meetings of virtually all aviation organizations in
the state, had an extensive commercial display area and heard talks by
retired General Steve Ritchie, AOPA President Phil Boyer and Dr. Jerry
Cockrell.
Sponsored by the Montana Aeronautics Division and co-hosted by the state’s
EAA chapters, the Montana Pilots Association (MPA), the Montana Aviation
Trades Association and the Montana Antique Airplane Association, 675
individuals were registered plus a host of high school students who
participated in a career day.
As part of the conference, an Ag recertification clinic was conducted and an
aircraft mechanics refresher seminar was held.
Montana’s aeronautics division administrator, Mike Ferguson, and Billings
host committee chair Tim McGinnis reported that safety seminars were held on
a wide variety of topics during the three-day meeting. Seminar topics were
varied. They included internet flight planning, transporting hazardous
cargo, aircraft icing, restoring an aircraft, U.S. Customs, an FAA Listening
Session and more.
Not everything was serious work, however, as door prizes were given to about
100 of those participating at luncheons and dinner sessions.
The MPA honored longtime supporter Dick Jacob, owner of Northwest Propeller
Service in Puyallup, Wash. Jacob has provided the MPA with a prop blade
mounted on a stand for use as an award to association members.
Awards handed out included:
Airport of the Year, Seeley Lake; Flight Instructor of the Year, Fred
Hasskamp, Hamilton; Educator of the Year: Dave Kimball, Rocky Mountain
College; Search & Rescue Coordinator of the Year, Lyle Sartain, Great Falls.
