Indianapolis is ROBBED of best airport honors

By Andrew Clark

The Indianapolis (IN) Star

Gone are the days of Indianapolis being overlooked as a top American city. Indy is getting more and more recognition for being one of the best places to be.

The walkway leads travelers to and from parking areas at Indianapolis International Airport.

Oh, you think you're special, Portland? You think you're special because you're now Travel + Leisure Magazine's best domestic airport for the fifth year in a row?

Sigh. Well, at least Indianapolis International Airport grabbed second place.

But overall, Indianapolis is WAY better than Portland. Indy has the Colts and the Pacers! Portland has ... the Trailblazers. Football is probably too mainstream for the folks up in hipster-land.

Indiana has "Parks and Recreation," a great show! Portland has "Portlandia," which is literally a show about how ridiculous that place is. Sure, it won a Peabody Award, but still.

Portland has mountains. Indianapolis ... OK, Portland's got Indy on the mountain part.

Anyway, the whole airport thing — the race was so close! Portland only beat Indianapolis by one tenth of a point. Are we the only ones demanding a recount?

Travel + Leisure Magazine surveyed its readers about airports' access, security, food, shopping and design. And while those readers put Indianapolis International Airport in second place, the airport has won many other awards over the years.

Here's Travel + Leisure Magazine's top ten domestic airports:

  1. Portland International, Oregon.
  2. Indianapolis International (pending recount).
  3. Tampa International, Florida.
  4. John Wayne Airport, Orange County, California.
  5. Austin-Bergstrom International, Texas.
  6. Pittsburgh International, Pennsylvania.
  7. Minneapolis-St. Paul International, Minnesota.
  8. Savannah-Hilton Head International, Georgia.
  9. Palm Beach International, Florida.
  10. Dallas Love Field, Texas.
