FAA Releases New GA Airports Study
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released today an 18-month study called General Aviation Airports: A National Asset. The study was conducted to capture the many diverse functions of general aviation (GA) airports.  The National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO), a participant in the study, applauded the FAA for issuing the report which was unveiled last week by Acting FAA Administrator Michael P. Huerta (Shown at right) during a luncheon presentation at the Aero Club of Washington.

Nebraska
Governor Proclaims May General Aviation Appreciation Month


On Wednesday of last week, gathered with representatives of Nebraska's aviation industry, Governor Dave Heineman unveiled a proclamation declaring the month of May as General Aviation (GA) Appreciation Month.

Michigan
State May Help Save City Airport
Michigan's top public aviation official said it's likely the state could end up subsidizing a portion of the $1 million annual operating deficit of Detroit's Coleman A. Young International Airport. The city is struggling to solve its wider cash crisis. "It would probably require that," said Mike Trout, (shown at right) executive administrator for the state Office of Aeronautics and director of the Michigan Aeronautics Commission.


 
 
U.S. Students Do Well in International Aviation Art Contest
Two U.S. students are among the nine winners of the 2012 International Aviation Art Contest for young people sanctioned by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA) and the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) and managed by the National Association of State Aviation Officials'  Center for Aviation Research and Education.

Young Aviation Artist from Lexington Wins International Award
A talented young Lexington artist has won 1st Place Internationally in the Federation Aeronautique Internationale 2012 Aviation Art Contest. Lewis Hwang of Lexington's work, (at left) took the top prize internationally in the 6-9 age group.

North Carolina
Division Of Aviation Awards Funding To General Airports
The NC Division of Aviation awarded $9,639,270 for Vision 100 funds from the Federal Aviation Administration to several general aviation airports across the state. Airports can use the funds for general airfield improvements, runway safety, runway extensions or even build a new terminal.

Airports Could Become Next Powerhouses For Renewable Energy Production
Airports could become the next powerhouses for renewable energy production says a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The study looked at land-use within airports and determined that much of the land within the boundaries of an airport go unused.

PHX Sky Train™ Achieves Another Milestone
The PHX Sky Train™ achieved another major milestone last week as Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton sent Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s new automated train on its first official journey.  The PHX Sky Train™ traveled on the track between the East Economy Parking train station and its maintenance facility.

Airport boardings in tailspin
The Jamestown Regional Airport Authority will send up to three people to Washington, D.C., to meet with officials June 6 in hopes of reversing a sudden decline in airplane boardings in Jamestown. The number of passengers per month getting on planes in Jamestown fell precipitously after the changeover in airlines from Delta to Great Lakes in March after Delta declined to bid on Jamestown’s Essential Air Service contract.

Tucson airport to get out of business of pumping plane gas
As gas station owners can attest, there’s no money to be made anymore pumping fuel. This week the Tucson Airport Authority (TAA) board voted to get out of the business of pumping it for planes at Tucson International Airport as well.
Before the vote, TAA President and CEO Bonnie Allin (Shown above) told the board it appears Tucson International “is alone among comparable airports” in directly providing fueling services.

More States, Cities Look to Test Drones
  "Eye in the Sky" is fast becoming a reality for many states and municipalities as they turn to unmanned vehicles -- or drones -- for law enforcement, surveillance, emergency response or monitoring traffic, among other uses.
  While privacy concerns about spying on Americans and difficulty in promulgating federal regulations have slowed the pace of implementation of unmanned flying equipment, experts in the field say the day is coming soon when drones will be flying routinely.

Drones Up to 25 Pounds Allowed for U.S. Safety Agencies
Public safety agencies will be able to operate unmanned aircraft with fewer restrictions, in the first changes in U.S. regulations that Congress ordered to broaden domestic use of non-military drones.
Police, fire and similar departments will be able to fly drones weighing as much as 25 pounds (11.3 kilos) without applying for special approvals needed under previous regulations
