American Airlines, American Eagle leaving 8 airports including Oakland
International
East Bay (CA) Business Times
American Airlines will close its operations at Oakland International Airport
and two other airports, and its regional affiliate, American Eagle, will
cease operations at five airports, all in November.
American said in a release Wednesday that the reductions are in line with
its announcement May 21 that it would reduce the number of domestic flights
by 11 percent to 12 percent and regional affiliate capacity by 10 percent to
11 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2007, and also retire at
least 75 planes and start charging passengers for checked luggage -- all in
response to the shock of rising oil prices, general economic woes and a
"difficult competitive environment."
American and American Eagle have 250 airports combined. The airports slated
for closure are: Oakland; London Stansted; and Barranquilla, Colombia, for
American; and Albany, N.Y.; Providence, R.I.; Harrisburg, Pa.; Samana,
Dominican Republic; and San Luis Obispo, for American Eagle, which also will
close its maintenance base in San Luis Obispo.
American plans to reduce departures in Chicago by 28 flights, and American
Eagle will cut 34 departures. In St. Louis, American will reduce departures
by eight flights, and American Eagle and AmericanConnection will cut 35
departures.
American will reduce 19 departures at Dallas/Fort Worth, along with 23
American Eagle flight reductions.
American also will cut five flights at LaGuardia Airport, and American Eagle
will cut 37 flights.
"Today, the dependability and delay issues that exist at LaGuardia have
reached a crisis point and have a daily negative impact on the overall
customer service and performance for every airline with flights at
LaGuardia," Bob Reding, American's executive vice president of operations
said in the release.
