Gun in airport washroom puzzles Peel police

Police are still unsure how a .22-calibre handgun made its way into a Customs Hall washroom at Toronto's Pearson International Airport Saturday.

And they may not have answers for several days, a police spokesman said.

An employee of the cleaning staff found the firearm in a garbage can in a Terminal 1 arrivals area.

Peel police Constable Adam Minnion said officers are following regular protocols to try to determine how and why the gun was placed there, including reviewing security camera footage.

He dismissed reports in other media that this represented a serious security breach.

"There is no massive probe that's under way. It's a normal criminal investigation just as we would treat everything else," he said.

Constable Minnion said the washroom is located in a non-restricted, customs-controlled part of the terminal.

It is unclear whether the gun was abandoned by an arriving traveller, or whether it was planted there for later use.
