Art could get boot for ads
Advertising could replace artwork
By Roger Yu
USA TODAY

PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh International is considering replacing one of its
most prominent pieces of art, Peter Calaboyias' Silver Grid Wall, with
advertising, triggering complaints from the artist and other local
officials. The aluminum work, which is 78 feet wide and 8 feet high, has
graced the wall above the escalators in the main terminal since 1992.

Spokeswoman JoAnn Jenny says Pittsburgh International is considering putting
up advertising to make up for the revenue that will be lost when US Airways
cuts back 40 flights next month. Jenny indicates the airport has received a
lot of interest in the space and estimated it would generate more than
$10,000 a month in advertising.

Calaboyias is trying to keep the installation in its spot by appealing to
local politicians, says the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which first reported on
the issue.

The airport has set up an art committee to study the issue and make a
recommendation to the board early next year.
