Schiphol Airport traffic seen dropping next yr after years of growth - report
11.27.07, 3:50 AM ET

AMSTERDAM (Thomson Financial) - The growth of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is seen stagnating unexpectedly after years of expansion, as next year should see a 2 pct drop in the number of flights at the airport, newspaper De Telegraaf said.
The paper based its report on numbers provided by the 'slot coordinator', an independent official assigned with distributing flight slots among airlines.
Budget airlines are currently ordering fewer flight slots at the airport next year, very likely due to a government proposal to strongly raise environmental taxes on airline tickets next year, the newspaper said.
While strong growth of approximately 4-6 pct per year at all other surrounding airports in Belgium, Germany, France and the United Kingdom is continuing unabated, only Schiphol airport is expected to report a slowdown.
De Telegraaf is itself running a public campaign against the higher environmental taxes on airline tickets.
