Iraq may hand over port, airport management to private sector
Kuwait News Agency
BAGHDAD, (KUNA) -- The Iraqi Transportation Ministry is looking into a
proposal for handing over the management of ports and airports to the
private sector.
The state's "Al-Sabah" newspaper quoted Thursday the ministry's Director
General for Transportation Affairs Mohammad Al-Iskafi as saying, "The
ministry is looking into a proposal by the cabinet to have ports and
airports managed by the private sector." He explained that management would
be in line with specific conditions, adding that the ministry had proposed
that the management of one of the ports be handed over to the private sector
on a trial basis.
Management conditions will include contributing to debt payment, as well as
rehabilitating the facility and carrying out necessary maintenance
operations, Al-Iskafi added.
Moreover, he said the Transportation Ministry was discussing whether or not
it could extend its jurisdiction to include border crossing in light of lack
of coordination between related ministries -- interior, finance and
commerce.
