Worker Killed Repaving Honolulu Airport
KITV Ch 4 (ABC), Honolulu (HI)
A man working on an asphalt repaving crew was killed Monday in a
construction accident at Honolulu International Airport.
Officials said the crew was repaving taxiways at the airport when the
accident happened just after 1 p.m.
A state transportation spokesman said a "rubber tire roller," used to
compact asphalt, ran over the 51-year-old man. City paramedics pronounced
him dead at the scene after the 27,000-pound vehicle crushed him.
Construction was halted as officials launched an investigation into the
fatal accident
"We are going to meet with FAA as well as the contractor, and what we want
to do is we want to make sure that all the safety requirements were followed
and we'll decide at that point whether to resume work or not," said Scott
Ishikawa, the state transportation spokesman.
The man had worked at contractor Jas. W. Glover for at least 20 years.
Co-workers said he leaves behind a wife, two daughters and a grandchild.
