Teen charged after jumping airport fence
BY GINA PACE
The Miami (FL) Herald
A 13-year-old boy breached security at Miami International Airport when he
jumped over a barbed-wire fence near Northwst 36th Street around 3 a.m.
Monday, according to Greg Chin, an airport spokesman.
The boy was seen by airport security and was arrested by the Miami-Dade
Police Department before being transferred to the Juvenile Assessment
Center.
''Unfortunately people do gain access to unauthorized areas, but we were
able to intercept him and get him in custody,'' Chin said. ``The systems we
have in place did work today.''
The boy's jump comes as local airports have said they will step up security
during the Fourth of July travel week, following terrorism incidents in
London and Scotland. Chin said that the airport expected only a small spike
in travel, however, because the holiday falls mid-week.
