Unclaimed Bag Prompts Sac Airport Closure
By Jason Kobely

A terminal at Sacramento International Airport was briefly evacuated
Saturday after an unattended bag triggered concerns among airport security
personnel.

Transportation Safety Administration screeners spotted the suspicious piece
of luggage on an x-ray conveyor belt in Terminal B1 around 1:40 p.m.,
Sacramento International Airport spokeswoman Cheryl Marcell said.

Marcell said TSA agents lost track of the bag after calling for a
supervisor, prompting authorities to clear nearly 400 passengers out of the
terminal as a precaution around 2:10 p.m.

Security personnel and Sacramento County sheriff's deputies searched the
terminal and found no sign of the luggage.

The terminal was reopened to travelers around 3:20 p.m. and during a
rescreening of passenger luggage, authorities found the bag and uncovered a
CD player inside, Marcell said.

Six flights were delayed by the evacuation. Passengers on three in-bound
planes were forced to wait aboard their flights for up to 45 minutes during
the terminal inspection.

While security was heightened Saturday at several major U.S. airports in the
wake of a suspected terrorist attack at Scotland's Glasgow Airport, Marcell
said security procedures remained unchanged Saturday at Sacramento
International.
