Britain raises terror threat level to critical
The Associated Press

LONDON - Britain's security alert level was raised to critical on Saturday -
the highest possible level, indicating terrorist attacks are imminent.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said security was tightened in response to three
suspected terrorist plots in London and Scotland.

"This is in response to the events of the last 48 hours. Critical is the
highest level of threat, and the threat level will be closely reviewed on a
regular basis. Appropriate security measures have been put in place," Smith
said in a statement.

The decision is made by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Center. It was
announced after a meeting of Britain's COBRA crisis committee, chaired by
Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The last time the alert level was critical was in August 2006 when
authorities uncovered a plot to blow up several trans-Atlantic flights.
