New Level Of Security at JIA

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- If you've ever taken a flight since 9/11, then you know how much tighter airport security has become.

Jacksonville International Airport is now raising the bar on its screening process with a new layer of protection.

The Transportation Security Administration has initiated roving patrols to randomly search employees, contractors, vendors and others with access to virtually all areas on airport grounds.

"This is a big step for us. We're trying to actually catch things before they get into the airport environment," said Ed Goodwin of the TSA.

Outside random inspection include the use of pat downs, metal detectors and looking under and through vehicles. Some inspections also take place inside the airport too.

"Any access area that someone can use their badge to get into the secure area of the airport we check," said Goodwin.

Some items have been recovered during these checks but nothing the TSA has labeled major.

"We're pleasantly surprised that people aren't in fact bringing dangerous items into the airport," Goodwin said.
