Letter to the Editor
Island's future depends on keeping open airport
The Hilton Head (SC) Island Packet
I wrote a letter to the Packet stating that money was behind the movement to
close our airport. It's more than money. After a little investigation, I
found it goes much deeper. It's about betrayal of public trust, personal
hidden agendas, power grabbing, racial issues and, of course, money. Not
necessarily in that order.
Those of us who retired to enjoy our golden years now face a critical
situation. We may be robbed of our dream. What is at stake is the safety and
security of our families, our personal economic stability, quality of life
and losing the reason we moved to Hilton Head Island.
What could be a result of losing the airport? What if we lose the bridge,
are cut off, have a disaster, local businesses fail, or worse. Hilton Head
will be an insignificant barrier island.
Under the guise of public interest, individuals are pursuing self-serving
ambitions that will have serious consequences for all of us. You know this
kind of person; they are always with us.
Its time for the silent majority to rally before it is too late. I suggest
attending public hearings, finding out who the culprits are by name, and
challenging their real reason for wanting to shut down our airport. When
those facts are made public, they will vanish like smoke.
This is not about trees, noise or length of runway. It's about greed,
politics and power. For all our sakes, help stop it in its tracks.
