"Airlines not to blame"

Letter to the Editor
Airlines not to blame
USA Today

USA TODAY's recent editorial "Oops! They did it again" blasts the airline
industry for weather related delays on three recent dates. But the delays
were beyond the airlines' control and left passengers stranded on planes
only in extreme situations (Tuesday).

What did USA TODAY want to happen in the situation of the American Airlines
plane that was scheduled to fly from Phoenix to Dallas but was delayed for
eight hours on April 24?

There was bad weather in the Dallas area. Eight uncomfortable hours on the
ground is a lot better than an eternity 8 feet underground.

The last sentence of the editorial suggests, "If airlines are too inept to
do better on their own, then Congress should make sure they do." If Congress
gets involved, it will produce a "Passengers' Bill of Rights" with $40
billion in pork and a non-binding Iraq troop pull-out resolution. And
travelers will be no better off because Congress can't control the weather.
