Salem airport looking for security screeners

One of the final steps to getting McNary Field ready for passenger air
service is under way. The Transportation Security Administration is looking
for security workers to screen passengers boarding Salem flights.

The agency plans to hire eight part-time officers to screen passengers at
the Salem airport, said Tina Burke, a TSA spokeswoman. Each will work about
20 hours per week. Screeners start at $13.30 an hour and receive medical
benefits.

The TSA is holding a forum for people interested in working as screeners at
6 p.m. Thursday at the Mission Mill Museum.

The TSA will not accept applications or do interviews at the Thursday event.
Instead, it will direct job seekers to www.usajobs.gov, where an application
can be submitted online. The local job listings are expected to be posted
online Friday.

In February, Delta Air Lines announced it will begin twice-daily flights
from Salem to Salt Lake City on June 7, via its SkyWest Airlines subsidiary.
Passenger screening by the TSA was one requirement to bring air service back
to Salem.

The minimum job requirements for a TSA screener are to be a legal resident
of the United States, have a high school diploma or equivalent, English
language proficiency and be able to pass a background and credit check.

In addition, screeners need to meet some physical requirements, such as
being able to lift 40-pound. bags.

The TSA is currently seeking only part-time workers in Salem. A full-time
supervisor will be transferred from the Portland International Airport to
run the Salem operation, and two lead transportation security officers will
be hired internally.
