Airport Scare Leads To Suspicion Of Flight To SLC

NEW YORK CITY - A man who avoided security screening at John F. Kennedy
International Airport in New York City on Thursday caused suspicion that he
might have been aboard a plane headed for Salt Lake City, authorities said.

The Transportation Security Administration said the man somehow got through
a security checkpoint without being properly screened at one of the
airport's terminals. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were
immediately called and two terminals at the airport were evacuated.
Passengers were also required to go through security screening for a second
time.

Within just minutes of the breach, five flights taxied away from their gates
and departed - causing authorities to believe that the man may have been
aboard one of them.

The flights were headed for Salt Lake City, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Palm
Beach (Fla.) and San Diego. However, Delta Air Lines flight 1565, which
landed in Salt Lake City Thursday evening, did not contain the suspect, the
TSA concluded.

No one was detained from any of the other four flights, either, officials
said.

A full-scale search for the suspicious man was launched at JFK Airport, but
he was never found.

The incident caused numerous flight delays - some for hours - at JFK
Airport.
