Birmingham airport sued over runway project
The Birmingham (AL) Business Journal
An environmental group has filed suit in federal court against the
Birmingham International Airport.
Blackwater Riverkeeper claims the airport is violating the Clean Water Act
resulting from a runway extension project.
The group alleges that sediment from the project, which began in 2002, is
harming nearby Village Creek.
"Riverkeeper seeks to hold the Airport Authority and its contractors
accountable where the Alabama Department of Environmental Management has
fallen short," according to a prepared statement from the group.
Airport spokeswoman Antoinette Herrera-Bast said the Airport Authority has
"just received (the suit), and we haven't had a chance to review it."
But, she said, the airport has been "working closely with ADEM to resolve
issues" regarding Village Creek.
