Damaged arch temporarily shuts LA airport's futuristic restaurant
The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - The space-age Encounter restaurant in the iconic Theme
Building at Los Angeles International Airport will be closed for renovation
after workers determined the soaring, 135-foot arches that envelop it were
unstable.

The problem began about two weeks ago after a half-ton piece of stucco fell
off the underside of one of the arches and landed on the restaurant's roof,
airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said Thursday.

It did not cause any injuries.

On Wednesday, engineers took a closer inspection and discovered weaknesses
in the upper arches and decided to shut the restaurant as a precaution,
Castles said.

The upper arches, which don't provide structural support for the
glass-encased restaurant, haven't been renovated since they were erected in
the late 1950s.

The upgrade was expected to last about six months, Castles said, adding the
restaurant was expected to open sooner.
