S.D. Airport Authority Discusses Expanding Lindbergh Field
By Alison St. John
KPBS-TV Ch 15 (PBS), San Diego (CA)
San Diego's regional Airport Authority will talk about the future of
Lindbergh Field this morning. Voters rejected the authority's recommendation
to negotiate a move to Miramar, and the question now is how best to expand
Lindbergh. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
This is the last meeting of this Airport Authority board. It officially
dissolves at midnight tonight. But Board Chair Joe Craver says before they
go, they'll consider whether the master plan that's on the table to expand
Lindbergh Field is really the best way to maximize its potential.
Craver: It was clear to the board that Lindbergh at some time is going to
run out of capacity, and I think it's is a very legitimate concern of the
board members OK what now? Is there a way that we could improve on the
proposed master plan that would buy as a few more years.
Some argue it's time to adopt a more ambitious master plan with new
terminals close to Interstate Five. Immediate expansion plans only call for
10 more gates and extra parking off Harbor Drive. A new board will pick up
where this one leaves off, starting in January.
