Keys airport awaits security
The Orlando (FL) Sentinel
MARATHON -- Security screening will begin at Florida Keys Marathon Airport,
allowing commercial airline service to resume, transportation officials said
Friday.
The Transportation Security Administration plans to contract
security-screening services for Florida Keys Marathon and Key West
International airports. Key West currently uses TSA staff screeners.
In a letter to Monroe County Airports, officials promised to have screening
services at Marathon by Feb. 15, even if it means using staff screeners
until a contractor is located, said Peter Horton, Monroe County Airports
director.
Horton said the airport's reopening could mean up to $44 million in economic
impact for the Keys.
TSA had originally said it would not provide screeners because of budget
restraints.
