The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey set some Thanksgiving holiday
travel records last week, despite bad weather and flight delays on the
Wednesday evening.

Some 1.6 million travelers passed through the airports from Wednesday to
Sunday, about 300,000 more than last year's holiday.

The AirTrain system set one-day ridership records on Wednesday, with close
to 20,000 paying riders making the trip to John F. Kennedy Airport on the
relatively new train line.

The AirTrain line carried 64,000 passengers to JFK over the weekend and
about 34,500 to Newark Liberty International Airport -- a fraction of the
1.6 million total area travelers, but the Port Authority says the $1.5
billion rail link is meeting traveler projections for its third year of
service.

"By all accounts, it was a relatively smooth extended weekend at the
airports," says aviation director William DeCota. High winds and rain caused
some delays Wednesday evening, but the Port Authority had increased its
holiday work force by 20% and was able to prevent backups at security lines
and ticket counters, according to a spokesman.
