'Heathrow plot did not deter air travel'
India - The Financial Express

NEW DELHI, - The terror plot in August to blow up planes in mid-air from the
UK to the US has not acted as a dampner on international air travel,
according to the latest data of International Air Transport Association.

As per the data, the growth momentum continued to remain at 5.8% in North
America in August, similar to the average growth registered during
January-August period.

Though the August bomb scare cannot be compared to the 9/11 attacks, the
incident then had led to a nearly 20% (the industry losses almost touched $6
billion in 2002 in the US) cut in air travel capacity, and severely
increased financial problems in the struggling US airline industry.

As August is a lean month for the air-transport sector, most of the regions,
with the exception of North America and Africa, saw a marginal decrease in
air traffic.

But growth continued in all the sectors. Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East
and North America registered a growth of 5.3%, 3.5%, 11.9% and 5.8%,
respectively, over the corresponding period in the previous year in terms of
revenue passenger kilometers (RPK). Africa was the only region that had a
higher growth rate in this lean month.
