TSA names security chief for BWI
The Baltimore (MD) Business Journal
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has a new head
of federal security.
James P. Schear was named BWI's new federal security director on Wednesday
by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). He will begin in
mid-October.
As head of TSA, Schear will oversee security surveillance and screening at
BWI. He is replacing Paul Malandrino, who left TSA this summer to head
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for the Metropolitan Washington
Airports Authority.
Schear served as TSA deputy assistant administrator for aviation operations
from 2002 to 2004. Since then, he was vice president of restructuring with
U.S. Airways Group Inc. He is currently the general manager for plans and
programs with TSA's security operations office where he oversees screening
and compliance issues for the federal agency.
"Jim has played an instrumental role in this agency since startup," said
Mike Restovich, TSA's assistant administrator for security operations.
TSA hired more than 50,000 transportation security officers nationwide after
the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The agency used a national hiring
contractor to speed the process along. Now TSA is making the transition to
local recruitment, allowing airports to hire their own staffs.
Last year 19.74 million passengers used BWI.
