Upgraded Security At Newark Airport Tested
Shake-Up Aimed At Fixing Long Lines, Poor Screener Performance
WNBC-TV Ch 4 (NBC), New York (NY)
NEWARK -- Federal officials are holding their breath this Memorial Day
weekend in the first real test of upgraded security procedures at Newark
Liberty Airport after a major shake-up at the top earlier this year.
Reports of long lines, screeners failing security tests, and poor screener
morale all caught the attention of Washington, and changes were made.
In a bid to fix these problems, federal authorities put Mark Hatfield, a
former assistant administrator at the U.S. Transportation Security
Administration, in charge on an interim basis 2 1/2 months ago.
In Newark, he has made changes to security, including a plan that allows
teams of screeners to be shifted to additional security stations at a few
moments' notice when long lines start to form.
So far, there are no reports of unusually long lines.
