Airport considering improving concessions

PALM SPRINGS -- The Palm Springs International Airport is proposing to Super
Size its concession offerings for travelers.

On Friday, a subcommittee of the airport commission got a draft plan by
consultants Simat, Helliesen & Eichner Inc./Center for Airport Management
suggesting ways to optimize food, beverage and retail sales at the airport.

A themed, eye-catching approach to expansion was proposed to capture the
spirit of Palm Springs and the greater Coachella Valley, inspire travelers
with a "sense of place" and beef up revenue: Sales totaling $4.6 million in
fiscal year 2004-2005, averaging $6.55 per passenger, could rise to $8.85
million under the proposal, nearly $10 per passenger, assuming air traffic
growth to 885,000 take offs and landings per year by 2010.

The subcommittee waved the plan onto the Palm Springs International Airport
commission and Palm Springs City Council for consideration at separate
meetings in June.
